SURAH 105 - سورة الفيل 



This chapter is about the plight of the people who have the habit of dreaming without a proper vision and action. The respected author wants to draw our attention by saying that - have we not seen such people who only dream/boast/brag and do nothing? The verses are in present continuous tense so it cannot be an event of the past. It is evident that we may have come across such people in our lives. The honorable "Quran" wants us to identify this wrong habit that leads to a  false notion of contentment, which turns into a strong belief. Due to this wrong belief, we face hindrances and eventually we began to trust our decisions which were based on unfounded illusions. The illusion becomes so strong that it compels us to take wrong decisions based on this hypothesis. These decisions lead us towards wrong actions which further lead to the crumbling of intellect and confidence, followed by bad consequences and ultimately we become a spent force (good for nothing). This is all because of your Consciousness (RABBUKA), which reacts to your uploading or feeding up of superfluous imagination that gradually creates a false feeling of hope  as though you are soaring up in the sky. Our Consciousness make us feel the state of bliss [Jannah] and Jahannum [state of stagnation], depends upon what type of intelligence we provide it.

This is a name of a disorder known as "flight of fantasy" in the psychologist's dictionary, as an unrealistic idea or fantastic notion, a pipe dream. For example, she was engaged in flights of fancy, such as owning a million-dollar house. This idiom uses flight in the sense of “a soaring of the imagination”. This is what tairun ababil (طَيْرًا أَبَابِيلَ) means.

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصْحَابِ الْفِيلِ 

(1) Don't you continuously observed how your Rabb [consciousness] dealt with those who possess the habit of boasting / fantasizing,

أَلَمْ يَجْعَلْ كَيْدَهُمْ فِي تَضْلِيلٍ

(2) Didn't He (Rabb) draw their plot  into error ?

وَأَرْسَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ طَيْرًا أَبَابِيلَ 

(3) He [Rabb] sent upon themselves flock of hovering illusions.   

تَرْمِيهِم بِحِجَارَةٍ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ 

(4) Striking them with the process of hindrances from / due to adjudicating.

فَجَعَلَهُمْ كَعَصْفٍ مَّأْكُولٍ

(5) So He (Rabb) made them like mentally burn out. 

Meanings from classical Arabic:

أَلَمْ = have not – prefixed interrogative alif – negative particle

تَرَ = to see, observe - The verb's trilateral root is ر أ ي - second person masculine singular imperfect verb, jussive mood

كَيْفَ = how – interrogative noun
فَعَلَ = did, dealt - 3rd person masculine singular perfect verb

رَبُّكَ = your Mind – nominative masculine noun – 2nd person masculine singular possessive pronoun

بِأَصْحَابِ with the owner, possessor - genitive masculine plural noun- bi preposition

الْفِيلِ = The weak in judgment, Magnified himself, become like elephant, aggrandize, the boaster - genitive masculine noun

يَجْعَلْ = He make - 3rd person masculine singular imperfect verb, jussive mood

كَيْدَهُمْ = Them believe/their belief - 3rd person masculine plural possessive pronoun - accusative masculine noun

فِي = In - preposition

تَضْلِيلٍ = Astray, error - genitive masculine indefinite (form II) verbal noun

وَ = And - CONJ – prefixed conjunction wa (and)

أَرْسَلَ = He sent on themselves - 3rd person masculine singular (form IV) perfect verb

عَلَيْهِمْ = On them - Preposition  – 3rd person masculine plural object pronoun

طَيْرًا = In the air, lies have no wings so they can fly, upon the ground, unfounded, not real, fled, ran away quickly, flight of fancy (Hawai Mahal or building castles in the air) - accusative masculine plural indefinite noun

أَبَابِيلَ = Resistances, withstood, steadily, directed his course, content, satisfaction - accusative masculine plural indefinite adjective

تَرْمِيهِم = striking them, forcing, driving them - 3rd person feminine singular imperfect verb – 3rd person masculine plural object pronoun

بِحِجَارَةٍ= With hindrances, detain, stopping, stone - Prefixed preposition bi – genitive feminine indefinite noun

مِّن = From - Preposition (min)

سِجِّيلٍ = Authentication, registration, documentation - genitive masculine indefinite noun

فَجَعَلَهُمْ = So made them - P
refixed coordinating conjunction fa (so) – 3rd person 
masculine singular perfect verb – 3rd person masculine plural object pronoun

كَعَصْفٍ = Wind blew violently, quick, swift - genitive masculine indefinite noun -
prefixed preposition (like) – genitive masculine indefinite noun

مَّأْكُولٍ = whose intelligence is totally consumed, mentally burn out, devoured, eaten up - genitive masculine indefinite passive participle



1 Have you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) not seen how your Lord dealt with the owners of the Elephant?
[The Elephant army which came from Yemen under the command of Abrahah Al-Ashram intending to destroy the Ka'bah at Makkah]. 

2 Did He not make their plot go astray? 

3 And He sent against them birds, in flocks, 

4 Striking them with stones of Sijjil (baked clay). 

5 And He made them like (an empty field of) stalks (of which the corn has been eaten up by cattle). 

The Hadith fabricators have created a fantastic story to distort the immemorial message of the honorable messenger by interpolating their own understanding with the pure message of the "Quran". By inserting the mythological story to justify their interpretation of the surah and thus successfully altering the vibrant meanings of the Arabic script.

The folly of this above interpretation is that the surah is addressed to the honorable messenger only. Thus confining the universal message for him only, by drawing attention of him by saying "Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the owners of the Elephants". But according to the same Hadith the honorable messenger was not even born or may be an infant of some months at the time of this event taking place. So how could he witness this event as per the verse 1 of the above surah. Both the traditional interpretation and the Hadith is contradicting each other.

The traditional story, related to the above surah promotes mysticism and fatalism among the followers of the traditional Arab religion. The story goes like this - The King named Abraha invades "House of Allah" (Mecca). The chief of Mecca Abu Mutallib decides not to confront the king and instead leave the matter to Allah. As the king was invading the house of Allah, so let "Allah" protect it from destruction, this was Abu Mutallib's arbitration. 

The story urges the readers to trust Allah as miracles do happen if we sincerely trust Allah. But innocent readers do not realize that the so called "house of Allah" was in custody of Abu Mutallib. In the "pre-Islamic" era the Kaaba contained 360 idols and it was the duty of the chief of Mecca to take care of the shrine. Instead he chose to hide in the mountains and watch the invaders of Kaaba. "Eventually Allah sent a flock of small birds throwing tiny stone missiles on a massive army consisting of elephants and destroyed them."

What the readers understand by believing in such stories is that if we worship God sincerely, He can do wonders for us. This belief keeps us so occupied, worshiping day and night, hoping to please the invisible God with different sets of rituals. 

The dedication towards work takes a backseat and the appeasement of personified God is given utmost priority, thus incurring losses in every aspect of life. Such unfounded beliefs inculcate mental disorders such as flight of fantasy, schizophrenia etc. - which is an unrealistic way of looking towards the sacred life. Life is  far more sacred and worth "worshiping" than anything else.
